{"id":1724,"date":"2022-11-29T13:03:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-29T10:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/giliticsmedia.co.ke\/?p=1724"},"modified":"2022-11-29T13:03:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T10:03:26","slug":"high-court-suspends-state-decision-to-import-gmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/giliticsmedia.co.ke\/high-court-suspends-state-decision-to-import-gmo\/","title":{"rendered":"<strong>High Court suspends State decision to import GMO<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Patrick Chiriba<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The High Court has temporarily put on hold the government\u2019s intention to import GMO pending the outcome of a petition by Kenya Peasants League challenging the lifting of the ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The injunction issued by Justice Mugure Thande also forbade the government from gazetting and distributing GMO foods, products, and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat pending hearing and determination of the application, the honourable Court issues an inductive order prohibiting the importation and distribution of the GMO crop and food,\u201d reads the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition filed by Kenya Peasants League, a lobby group, is the second to be lodged against the government\u2019s decision to allow GMOs in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group representing small-scale farmers claims the decision to lift the ban is unprocedural and unlawful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawyer Paul Mwangi filed the first petition saying that the introduction of GMOs poses serious health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both petitions oppose the importation, cultivation and consumption of GMOs in the country. The government is yet to file its responses to the petitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GMOs were banned in 2012 by former president Mwai Kibaki.
